Dartington village, located in the South Hams district of Devon, is nowadays most frequently identified with the famous Dartington Hall and associated Dartington Glass works. However its history is longer and more varied.
First recorded before the Domesday book, Dartington’s boundaries have shifted through the ages across a number of hamlets and communities so that it is not so much a village as a collection of commuities.
Dartington’s sphere of influence grew with the development of the 14th Century Dartington Hall, whose estates brought new enterprises to the area and crystalised Dartington into the lives of many local people through not only farming, but textiles and timber.
Dartington has held a fascination to me all of my life through stories I have heard growing up, and a lifetime in the area.
This website on Dartington, is in its infancy. However we hope to use it as a means to share our interest, and perhaps hear your stories about Dartington.
