First recorded in the Domesday book, Dartington village, located in the South Hams district of beautiful South Devon, is nowadays most frequently identified with the famous Dartington Hall and associated Dartington Glass works.
Close to the nearby town of Totnes, but nevertheless maintaining its own sphere of influence, Dartington grew with the development of the 14th Century Dartington Hall. The Dartington Hall estates brought with them new enterprises; not only farming, but textiles and timber management.
However the Hall is just a part of Dartington which covers a number of hamlets and communities. Dartington is not just a village but a collection of communities and this area has held a fascination to me all of my life; the stories I have heard growing up, the people I know and a lifetime in the area.
This website on Dartington, is in its infancy. However I hope to use it as a means to share my interest, and perhaps hear your stories about Dartington, Totnes and the River Dart.
